Mother's Day Issue - Motherhood Supplement for Female Magazine
Feeling Beautiful
As happy as you may feel about being pregnant, no doubt there will be times when you just can't stand how big you feel or look. As your breasts enlarge, your waistline disappears, and your abdomen grows, you may have very mixed feelings. It's hard not to.
In a society that prizes thinness, it's not unusual to feel unattractive at least some of the time during pregnancy. You may feel incredibly proud of the new life growing inside you, but other days you're apt to just feel fat. (Veterans of the pregnancy blues say it gets easier when you're clearly pregnant--after 7 months, say--rather than in the beginning, when you may just look like you've gained weight.)
Pregnant women are beautiful, no doubt about it. But in addition to that telltale rosy glow (which is actually caused by increased blood flow in your body), pregnancy can also stimulate some less desirable changes in your appearance. You probably expected the bloating and weight gain, but did you also know that your skin could become blotchy, prone to acne, and dry or oily, and your hair texture thinner or thicker?
These are some of the outward signs of the internal hormonal changes you're going through now. But that doesn't mean you have to grin and bear them. Pregnancy is a great time to reevaluate your beauty routine and to experiment a little. Makeup can do wonders during your pregnancy. It can be used as a tool to feel pretty and in control, which is particularly important during this time.
Pregnancy's pleasant surprises
Hair is often thicker during pregnancy because less falls out for this 9-month period.
Many pregnant women look radiantly healthy. The capillaries in the skin dilate under the influence of hormones and blood flow increases, heightening color.
Lots of husbands adore their wives' pregnant figures.
Looking your best
Remember, you're pregnant, not fat!
Spoil yourself occasionally. Treat yourself to a pedicure, manicure, or some new lacy underwear.
Exercise. It'll make you feel better about the way you look and help you return to shape after delivery.
Strive to stay within your recommended weight gain. Most women are encouraged to gain between 25 and 35 pounds during pregnancy.

Getting Back Into Shape
Hard to believe, but you won't always look pregnant, even though you may feel that way immediately after giving birth. It takes time, patience, and the usual prescription of good nutrition and physical activity to get back in shape.
Getting your body back may be high on your wish list, but you should start slowly, a little bit at a time. You already know how to eat well, because you've been doing so for nine months. When it comes to exercise, first you need to make sure you are physically ready. Then, you can begin the process of regaining your former shape with a series of easy stretching and firming exercises. As soon as you're able, you can add a second set of more difficult exercises.
Most obstetricians will tell you to wait until your six-week postpartum checkup before you start an exercise program. However, the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecologists says it's okay to gradually resume your pre-pregnancy routine based on your personal physical capability.
Generally, if you exercised right up until delivery, you can probably safely perform your pre-pregnancy workout or at least light exercise such as modified sit-ups and stretching from the get-go.
Avoid exercises that make your breasts sore or tender, and always try to exercise after nursing your baby. Your breasts won't feel uncomfortably full and your baby will appreciate it, too. Recent research suggests that if a mother attempts to breastfeed immediately after rigorous exercise, her baby may shun the breast completely or nurse less vigorously. (This distaste for breast milk should pass within 60 minutes after the workout.)
Eager as you are to regain your pre-pregnancy shape, remember to take it easy at first and get an okay from your healthcare provider. In addition to the easy exercises listed below, you'll also want to do some type of cardiovascular workout, such as brisk walking. Start out with five minutes, two or three days per week, and work up to 20 minutes. As you feel stronger and less sleep deprived you can add sets and do more repetitions to increase the level of difficulty.
For Weeks 1 4
Pelvic Floor-
These muscles tire easily, so it's best to do several contractions repeatedly throughout the day rather than in one session. Kegels are also a good way to keep the vaginal canal in shape, so to speak.
Lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor.
Tighten the muscles of the vagina as if trying to interrupt the flow of urine when going to the bathroom.
Hold for a count of 4, then release.
Push-ups
Push-ups are a good way to strengthen the upper-body muscles needed for carrying your little one. If you have time to do only a few exercises, make sure this is one of them.
Start on all fours with your knees directly below your hips, and hands slightly more than shoulder-width apart.
Keeping your back flat and your stomach in, gently bend your elbows and then straighten again. Keep breathing normally, and don't lock your elbows when you straighten them.
Repeat 10 to 12 times. Work up to three sets.
Head and shoulder raises
Lie on your back with your knees bent and your hands behind your head.
Take a breath and, as you exhale, tighten your abdominal muscles, flatten the small of your back against the floor, and raise your head and shoulders off the ground. Slowly lower and repeat the entire sequence eight to 10 times.
Pelvic tilt
Lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor.
Inhale and allow your abdomen to expand.
Exhale and lift your tailbone toward your navel, keeping your hips on the floor.
At the top of the tilt, tighten your buttocks, then release. Repeat eight to 10 times.
For Week 4 and After
At about 4 to 6 weeks postpartum or earlier if you're physically able add the following activities to the beginning set of exercises. You'll need a Dyna-Band (an oversized rubberband that you can use to create resistance), a pair of 3-pound dumbbells, and a pair of 5- or 10-pound dumbbells (available at sporting goods stores). To increase difficulty, add repetitions, sets of repetitions, and/or weights.
Begin each workout with a warm-up: Try five minutes of marching in place or fast walking. Hold each stretch for 20 seconds. Cool down afterward with some light stretching.
Leg slide
Lie with your back on the floor and your knees bent.
Tighten your abdominal muscles and press the small of your back against the floor as you breathe out.
Slide both legs away from your body slowly, using your abdominal muscles to keep your back flat on the floor.
When your back starts to arch, bring your legs back to the start position keep your stomach tight. Repeat eight to 10 times.
Pay attention to your breathing throughout this exercise. Remember to tighten your abdominal muscles and flatten your back before you start sliding your legs away from you. As your stomach muscles strengthen, you'll find you can push out your legs farther.
Seated-lat row
Sit on the edge of a chair, knees bent and feet flat on the floor, with a 3- to 5-pound dumbbell on either side of your feet.
Bend forward, bringing your chest close to your thighs. Keep your back flat.
Holding one dumbbell in each hand, let your arms hang straight down, palms facing each other.
Bend your elbows, bringing them up toward your shoulders. Straighten your arms and repeat eight to 10 times.
Rear dumbbell fly
With a 3- to 5-pound dumbbell in each hand, sit on the edge of a chair, knees bent and feet flat.
Squeeze your shoulder blades, lifting elbows up and out from your sides until they're even with your shoulders.
Straighten your arms to starting position. Repeat eight to 10 times.
Dyna-Band lat pull-down
Sit on a chair holding a Dyna-Band overhead, stretched between both hands, arms straight and hands at least shoulder width apart.
Bend your elbows, bringing then down toward your waist until the band touches your collarbone. Repeat eight to 10 times.

The following pearls of wisdom aren't going to help you get your body into shape, but they will definitely help your spirit feel plenty healthy:
Don't Do It All Yourself:
If you need help, ask for it. Ask friends to bring dinner. See if your mother-in-law can fold laundry while you nurse. Leave the baby with your husband while you go to the gym. Hire a cleaner to scour your house once a month.
Find a support network
Hook up with new moms from your local church or even your childbirth preparation class. Finding a community of like-minded people is key to keeping your sanity.
Make it easy to eat right
Keep the numbers of local restaurants handy for a quick, delivered meal.
Keep a beauty routine
Make it a point to start each day by taking a shower, getting dressed and putting on makeup first thing. It will be a relaxing ritual for you and you will feel put together even when it seems your life has turned to hectic chaos.
Breath
Spend a few moments while you are holding baby doing deep breathing exercises. You will feel calmer and more energized.
Buy a good breast pump
An efficient electric breast pump lets you get out on your own without worrying that your baby will be hungry.
Go on a date with your husband
Whether it's dinner, a movie or a stroll around the block, don't neglect your spouse. Keeping your marriage healthy is important to you, him and your child.
Go on a date with friends
Let the dads stay home to watch the kids, and meet your girlfriends out for a fun dinner or a movie or just a cup of tea.

Fashion for Expecting Mums
Just because you're having a baby doesn't mean you need to dress like one! A few years ago, when my cousin, an attorney, became pregnant with her first child, she was surprised to find that the majority of maternity clothing were pastel frocks covered in bows and lace. Since my cousin is a sophisticated, career-minded woman, she wanted clothing that reflected her lifestyle and taste. After all, maternity is a time when a woman can feel a glowing sense of wellbeing or like an enormous beached whale. Comfort is a key priority, but just because you've got a baby on board shouldn't mean your sense of style has to take a walk. You want to feel beautiful.
The invention of stretch fabrics has made proudly displaying the pregnant body both practical and respectable. Even flaunting it has become a fashion statement. Remember the Hollywood stars who were recently pregnant such as Uma Thurman, Lisa Rinna, Jada Pinkett and Jodie Foster, were repeatedly photographed going to galas in glamorous form-fitting outfits. And they looked great!
For your own bit of glamour, indulge in sexy apparel and get familiar with fabulous accessories like scarves and wraps. A beautiful scarf (or necklace) draws attention away from your midsection, and toward your pretty face. And a touch of style reminds others that there is more to you than a person who is about to become very, very familiar with diapers and vomit. It tells people that they can still relate to the old you and reassures them that you will talk about something other than sleeplessness and lower back pain.
Invest in clothing that will allow you to layer. Your metabolic rate increases by about 20 percent when you're pregnant, which means that if everyone else is shivering, you're just as likely to be complaining about the heat. Layering your clothes will mean you can peel them off as needed. And remember to splurge, at least a little. Even if your budget doesn't allow for a completely new wardrobe, invest in one outfit that make you feel special. A sexy dress, black velvet pants and a sequin top, or a stunning suit can make you look like a million dollars when you feel anything but. And wear it as much as possible, while you can.
Standing straight and dressing with confidence conveys the message that although your life is about to change, you are still the vibrant and interesting woman you've always been. Remember to accentuate your positive features. If your legs are looking hot, flaunt them in a short dress. Upper arms still looking firm? Show them off with a sleeveless shirt. Happy to have those newly larger breasts? Try a low-cut top. There is no rule saying that pregnant women have to go undercover.
Fashion houses have finally realized that women want to feel good about their appearance just as much when they're pregnant than when they're not. We've raided the racks of the best designers in an effort to find the greatest looks to match your glow. Montessori
We all want what is best for our children. We all want our children to reach their full potential. With alternative methods of education, such as home-schooling and elite private schooling, becoming more popular world wide, it is difficult to know which method of learning will suit your child's needs and your lifestyle. Montessori education is tried and tested, and we're lucky because we have a accredited Montessori center right here in Singapore.
The History of Montessori:
Around 100 years ago Maria Montessori became Italy's first women doctor of medicine. But she did much more. She started a sensory-based learning method that is now playing a major part in what many are calling "the learning revolution". Working with so-called "mental defectives" in Italy, Maria Montessori taught them to read, write, spell and count well before starting school.
But even more importantly, she discovered a lasting truth: if you create the right environment for learning, every very young child will assume self-directed learning. And in doing so they will discover the joy of learning and fulfillment and will go on teaching themselves throughout life. She learned that the years from birth to six are the most vital of all, meaning that waiting until school age before focusing on your child's education is a huge loss.
The Montessori Philosophy:
The basic Montessori ideology consists of the following five points:
Encourage children to nurture positive and glad feelings about learning;
Develop self-motivation and concentrated time periods necessary to choose their own activities and complete them with care and precision;
Become aware, appreciate, respect and care for one's environment, self and others;
Be enthusiastic and find pleasure in new and challenging activities;
Strive for success and enjoy a sense of accomplishment.
The Montessori Curriculum:
Montessori curriculum is comprehensive and encompasses the physical, mental, social and aesthetic development of a child in a self-learning environment that is void of stress. The approach to education provides for your child to continue at his or her pace within an individualized learning framework. The adults in each class act as guides and conduits to education rather than as instructors. Besides Languages, Mathematics, Cultural Studies and the Sciences (Botany, Zoology and Geography), children also work with activities, that develop and strengthen their muscular co-ordination, motor skills and enhance their Sensory awareness. They also have an opportunity to develop their social skills.
How to Get Started:
To achieve the fullest benefit of Montessori education, a child should spend at least three academic years in a full Montessori program. However, there are alternate programs, including daycare and even training for parents, available.
If you are interested in earning a part-time Pre-Primary International Diploma, Modern Montessori Training Centre offers a one-year part time programme designed for parents who wish to have a firm understanding in child development, Montessori philosophy and effective parenting skills. You will learn the Montessori Philosophy, how to plan your child's curriculum, child development, early years environmental influences, exercises in practical life, sensorial training, language and mathematics teaching, cultural subjects, botany, zoology, geography, history, music and modern movement teaching.

How To Buy Books For Your Child
Reading is a vital social skill needed for everything from school to video games to finding your way around town. There are many things you as a parent can do to make your child's learning to read an enjoyable process, thereby giving your child an edge when she is ready to enter school. And reading with your child is a wonderful way to spend quality time while introducing critical thinking skills that will help your child develop a sense of perspective and an open mind about the world in which she lives. Children who like to read have superior vocabulary skills, are better writers and are less likely to do poorly on schoolwork than those who don't enjoy reading.
Never too young to start-
As early as six months old, although you might feel silly because baby has yet to understand what words mean, your child will be delighted by the warmth of being held in your arms and hearing the sound of your expressive voice as you read. This will encourage a healthy interest in books, a positive reinforcement, from which your child will draw upon the rest of his life.
Set aside time each day to share books-
You can create warm moments and lasting memories by reading daily with your child. But you will also feed your child's brain important nourishment for creative skills and imaginative thinking. If you start the habit of reading daily while your baby is young, the act of reading daily will become as integral to your child's happiness and wellbeing as eating and sleeping.
Integrate reading into your daily routine-
Take advantage of waiting time on buses or car trips. When you're traveling, read to your baby signs, books, cards, newspaper and magazine articles. It is the sounds that are important at an early age. Singing or reading nursery rhymes and songs to comfort your child, simply involving your child by having her point out objects as you name them, and talking about pictures while repeating common words will create a thirst for knowledge and a confidence about learning.
Helpful reading time tips-
-For babies, introduce simple picture books as baby's interest grows. The shapes and colours will delight her and with each new book her imagination and intellect will grow.
-Choose books that are small in size and easy to handle. Since baby's finger control is still developing, books with easy-to-turn pages will give her confidence and make her a real part of the experience.
-Activity based books, those that squeak when squeezed, or have flaps that flip open to reveal exciting pictures will captivate your child and improve your child's dexterity.
-When baby is about 1 year old, choose books with clearly drawn pictures, illustrations that are clear rather than blotches of color, are easier on your child's developing eyes. Your child will laugh when he sees a funny picture, a sure sign that his interest is captured. Be prepared for his non-stop babbling as you read to him - it's a sign that he is beginning to realize the difference between the written and spoken word.
-Create a positive mood for your reading time. Find a comfortable corner and prop yourselves up with pillows. Instead of saying, 'Stop that and settle down', try 'Come and sit on my lap for a story'.
-Use expression when reading. Change your voice for different characters. Make it soft, loud or squeaky to hold your child's attention.
-Vary the pace. Don't race through a story even if it's the sixth time you are reading it. If time is a problem, read a shorter story.
-And be patient. Take time to answer your child's questions and remember that his questions mean that you have his attention.
-Enjoy the experience you are sharing and the memories you are building. Reading is fun and creates a closeness that your child will not forget.
As baby grows up-
Introduce short stories as your child begins talking in sentences. By the age of about three years old, you should be helping your child decipher all the clues on the page the words or pictures that help to tell the story. Introducing stories that leave room for discussion will help your child develop the ability to think clearly and develop ideas and opinions.
Give him what he wants-
As your child develops his own tastes and interests, look for books with good, artistically drawn illustrations on subjects that match his interest level. For example, if your child loves cars, look for car stories with more text. Three lines would be ideal with words printed in upper and lower case, instead of all caps. This is the time to acquaint your child with written text.
